Fast hands are the start of a fast swing!

Think of increasing swing speed the same way you’d quicken your walk: if you swing your arms faster, your legs naturally pick up pace to match. In the golf swing, the hands lead in creating clubhead speed—when you accelerate the hands through the takeaway and especially through the transition and into the downswing, the club builds lag and releases more power. The body then responds by rotating faster to support that hand-driven acceleration, syncing hips, torso, and shoulders to maintain balance and timing.

Key points:

  • Hands initiate clubhead acceleration: faster hand speed creates greater centripetal force on the club.

  • Maintain connection: let the body follow the hands rather than forcing the hands with body-only movement.

  • Efficient sequencing: hands-first acceleration encourages proper hip rotation and trunk turn, producing more coordinated speed through impact.

  • Control and rhythm: practice with short, controlled swings and gradual ramp-up of hand speed to keep timing and contact consistent.

Drills: make short swings focusing on flicking the hands faster through impact, then progressively lengthen the swing while keeping the same hand acceleration. This trains the body to “follow” the hands, producing higher overall swing speed without losing balance or control.
